Imagine a ghost story which is a celebration of life.
Maybe you’ve read some of those, and maybe not.
Ghosts is the story of Catrina, a.k.a. Cat, and her younger sister, Maya. Maya has a chronic health condition which demands daily attention and shortens her life expectancy, and Cat tries to look out for her sister while attempting to have a full life herself.
I don’t want to give away too much in this story, so I’ll stick to vague info.
Cat and Maya move to a town where the climate is healthier for Maya. Cat’s initial impression of the town isn’t good, and she keeps seeing new things that disturb her. She and Maya meet people who are caring and interesting, though, and they become familiar with the local ethnic culture — a culture which is in their own family history, although they never explored it before.
We all fear the unknown. An anchor in the community can help us deal with things we don’t understand, though, and that anchor doesn’t necessarily have to be cult-like.
One person’s safety zone may be frightening to others, but sometimes that’s because the world is a bigger place than many of us assume.
