Earlier this week I watched an excellent “docudrama,” Good Night And Good Luck (2005 release, now available on DVD). I recommend it, especially if you are unfamiliar with Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy’s red baiting during the 1950s.
If you’ve missed this part of Twentieth Century history completely, you can google the topic before watching the movie. Take a look at the online bios of Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, Edward R. Murrow, Joseph N. Welch and William S. Paley for background.
Some of the principals were heroes, some villains and quite a few were just human. Be grateful for people such as CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow, who risked his career and reputation to treat a national crisis responsibly.
