Serbian Orthodox Cathedral In NYC Burns

On Sunday, shortly after Orthodox Easter services, a fire began at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral Of Saint Sava on West 25th Street. With the exception of the outer walls, the building was destroyed.

Please don’t say this doesn’t affect you.  We can suffer a domino effect from almost any tragedy, and if you read enough about the history of this particular location you’ll find something which should make an impression — if you read literature.

I’ll include links to the N.Y. Times article on the fire, as well as a history page from the cathedral’s own website.  It’s impressive that the reporter with the Times mentioned that not all Christian denominations use the Gregorian Calendar, which explains why Easter was celebrated in the church yesterday.  Most news outlets wouldn’t have bothered with that.

And now for the connection to literature…

Oh, I think I’ll let you find that yourself.
